Reading Log

2009
09.30

Meghan has decided to join the Battle of the Books team at her school this year.  Between her normal classroom reading obligation plus the B.O.B. team, this translates into a whole lotta reading going on!  I realized that we’re going to need some way to keep it all straight!  Originally, I thought I’d make a wall chart for her to record the books she’s read . . . but then I thought that a cute little Book Journal might be more fun and easier to use.  After perusing the internet for book log ideas, I went to work creating my own.

For the inside pages of the journal, I used Microsoft Publisher to create a two-sided log sheet for Meg to enter the important information about the book, including the title, author, number of pages, summary, difficulty, rating, and even some new vocabulary words learned.  I formatted it to fit two pages per 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper and then cut them apart with my large paper trimmer.

Next, I designed the cover in Photoshop.  I used some digital scrapbook paper  and ribbon from Ronna Penner for the background, a digital element from Rhonna Farrer for the title frame and some clip art I found in Microsoft Publisher to make a cute, custom  book cover.  I printed it out, and adhered it to chipboard with gel medium to create the front and back covers of my notebook, which I eventually spiral bound with my Bind-It-All. I think it turned out so cute!

Meg squealed with delight when I gave it to her, so I think I can call this quick and easy project a success!  Hopefully she will use it to stay organized, and will be proud of herself when she fills every page with the wonderful books she’ll be reading this year!

A Walk in the Woods

taller treesI have so many things to say about my trip to Trees for Tomorrow with Reilly and his classmates . . . and I want to do it justice.  The trip was amazing, and I’m still churning the whole experience around in my head.  A real post will come very soon, but when I saw this quote today, I knew I had to jot it down before I forgot, because it beautifully sums up the experience.

Peace,
Leslie

Photography

Photography has fascinated me for as long as I can remember.  I think the ability to capture a treasured moment for eternity has a huge appeal.  There are so many moments of my life that I wish had been captured in a photo . . . and I guess I’m always mindful of that.  I take a lot of photos.

I got a 35mm film camera shortly after Reilly was born, because I figured some day he’d want to have good photos of himself as a child.  Mike has very few photos of himself as a kid — one of the negatives of being the 7th of 9, I guess.  I have a bunch of photos, but I wouldn’t necessarily call them “good”.  My mom’s photography skills have been joked about for as long as I can remember.  Anyhow, I wanted to document his life nicely.

When I began to scrapbook, it created the urge to improve my photography skills even more.  I worked on perfecting “my eye” if not the technical aspects of photography . . . and it paid off.  When Meghan was born and our favorite portrait photographer left the studio we regularly visited, I said “To heck with it.” and started taking my own.  And family members took notice and encouraged me.

Of course, before long, I decided I “needed” a DSLR.  And right about the time I began this blog, Mike surprised me with one for Mother’s Day.  Like so many others, having the ability to take a gazillion photos with instant access to view them made it easy to practice, practice, practice.  (And delete, delete, delete!)  But over the years, I’ve gotten better and learned a lot.  I mostly shoot for my own enjoyment . . . but have been called on occasionally by a friend or family member to take photos for them.  Would I ever do it professionally?  I doubt it . . . but I certainly enjoy the thrill of getting “the perfect shot”.

So, anyways . . . I was recently asked by my dear friend (and photographer extraordinaire!) Tracie to assist her with a wedding that she’s shooting at the end of September.  I was honored, humbled, and excited to have such a great opportunity given to me!

In anticipation of the wedding, Tracie lent me the camera I will be using that day so I can get used to the differences between it and my own DSLR.  Hers is waaaaaay nicer, and I now have the “upgrade” itch!!  (Sorry, dearest husband!!)  I spent the weekend practicing with it and was blown away with the results I was getting.

I thought I’d share some of the photos I took, just for fun.  I don’t normally document a weekend quite as heavily in photos!  I must thank my family for being patient subjects, as they had a (very large) camera lens in their faces much of the time!

The photos:

Pool time with Meghan.  I got to experiment with sunny conditions and some shade, too.

Meghan performing a Musical Dive (a song, followed by a dive off the diving board.)  She’s a performer, what can I say.

On Sunday, our family went geocaching for the first time.  I knew I wouldn’t get my hands on the GPS, so I brought the camera along instead.  These photos were at the first cache location, a small cemetery close to our house.  Those old grave markers were amazing, and I love these photos.

The next photos were taken in park where the 2nd cache was located.  A cool tree, and the hidden cache!

Tonight, the camera is coming with me to football practice, so I can work some more on Live Action shots!

I’m so grateful for the chance to improve my photography skills once again!  Thanks, Tracie!!

Back to reality . . .

It’s September 2nd . . . and I’m wondering where the summer went!  I was just coming to post my July photo collage, and then I realized I needed an August one as well!  Time has slipped away from me, and I’ve been a bad blogger to boot!  I am having a hard time coming to grips that school has started, and we’re back to the daily grind.  Since Mike is employed once again, I don’t have the luxury of letting him take care of all of the morning details like I did when he was off!  It was a nice respite, but alas, it has come to an end!!

I feel like I cannot just gloss over the past two months, so I’ll post my photos so I can move on and get back to being a 2x/week blogger.  (Right!)   I have a blog post of some actual content that I’m working on, so stay tuned.

July:

Numbered, in no apparent order:

1.  Swimming in Wilson Lake, Mercer, WI.  Not me.  The crazy girl that lives with me.
2.  Racine Dragon Boat Festival:  Flynnigan’s Wake team captained by my hubby, Mike.
3.  Our 15th Wedding Anniversary!  Dinner & yummy dessert at Maggiano’s!
4.  5 a.m. fishing up at the cabin.  (And no, she really wasn’t drinking the coffee in front of her.  At least I hope not.)
5.  The entire Flynn clan in one photo — a momentous (and tricky to document) occasion!
6.  Reilly gets an eye exam — and GLASSES!  Isn’t he handsome??  (Don’t worry, a haircut followed shortly after!)
7.  The birthday girl turning 9 on July 12th.
8.  The birthday boy turning 12 on July 29th.
(Numbers 7. and 8. are making me feel really old.  Rotten big kids.)

August:

Numbered, again, in no apparent order:  (Yeah, I’m lazy and let Picasa make my collages for me, relinquishing control.  It’s good for me.)

1.  The kids on some crazy ride at the St. Rita’s parish festival.  They obviously do not take after their mother.
2.  Mike picking cherries on our Door County/Belated Anniversary getaway.
3.  First Day of School.  Waah!  Where did my tiny little anklebiters go?  And why are these kids impersonating them so big?
4.  Mike and I in Door County. Pay no attention to my weird frizzy hair.  It was hot and humid that day.
5.  Reilly traded his black belt in Tae Kwon Do for a football helmet.  Mommy is adjusting.  Kinda.
6.  My awful back-to-school To Do list.  Make it go away!

Well, there you have it.  The last 2 months of summer, more or less.  Enjoy.
