Feeling guilty and playing catch-up

2005
07.20

Why is it that I feel guilty about what I did this weekend? I shouldn’t. I spent every waking moment with my family. We had SO MUCH FUN!!! But I didn’t get a darn thing on my “To Do” list done, and that makes me feel guilty and stressed out. That’s so uncool. I should be thankful for having such a glorious weekend, and for being able to spend such great quality time with my hubby and children!

Friday Night
So, I get home from work Friday to find my husband and kids in the pool with Mike’s brother and my 2 nieces. I slip inside the house, knowing I’m not needed out there!! LOL! Instead of starting on the laundry, or getting some scrapbooking done, I go and take a nap. A two hour nap!! SCORE!!! FireworksThe kids wake me up in time to share in the Chinese food that my sister-in-law Tina picked up and brought over!! Then it was off to the Salmon-a-Rama fireworks at the lake! I got to try out the new XT on my new (from Christmas!) tripod with the new wireless remote!! The results: not too bad for a first attempt.

Saturday
Actually, Saturday was our 11 Year Wedding Anniversary!! Eleven years!! Mike got to fly a sea plane in the morning, so I took Reilly to Tae Kwon Do, and then to get his hair cut. Meg begged for the customary pink stripe in her hair, as we do each time Ry gets his hair cut. I just bought a tube of the stuff, so we could stripe our hair pink at our every whim! Then it was off to lunch at Noodles & Co. (or “Pasta, Pasta, Pasta” as Meg likes to call it!)

Blue Angels
By the afternoon, we were all back home, and decided to head up to Milwaukee for the Air Show!! While we missed the morning events, we really just wanted to see the grand finale — The Blue Angels!! The planes had been zipping past my office window as they practiced earlier in the week, and I realized it has been ages since we’d gone to an airshow!! When Mike and I were dating, it seemed like we did all sorts of aviation-related activities!! Getting to Milwaukee, fighting traffic, finding a parking space, and walking to the lakefront — not so much fun. The airshow itself — fabulous!!! I feared we were too far away from the action, but not so!! The camera got another workout! Lots of good close-ups of airplanes — and of the kids playing on the beach where we were sitting!Kids on Beach

After the show, we debated whether to go out to dinner for our anniversary. But, since we had been sitting out in the 95 degree heat on the beach, the entire lot of us was not exactly in “restaurant” condition. So we headed home, grilled some burgers and dogs, and then went for a swim.

Did I mention that I haven’t done a single bit of housework yet?? The laundry is beginning to pile up!

Sunday

Started the day out right by going to church. Our quaint little country church, I should mention, is not air conditioned. So attending mass during the summer months requires a bit of tenacity, a lot of good humor, and a decent coating of underarm deodorant. Our priest was gone, so we had a visiting priest instead. He began mass with the usual opening prayer, followed by a “Mass has ended, let us go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.” For a split second, I thought he had completely lost his mind. Then I realized he was exercising the necessary “good humor” element!! He actually kept mass to 30 minutes, so we invited him to come back at any time!!

Next stop, Racine’s North Beach for my nephew Collin’s birthday party. Two days in a row in Lake Michigan. Fun. But the kids had a blast swimming in the Lake, and I tried not to be too grossed out. Thankfully, Racine’s beach is much cleaner and better maintaned than Milwaukee’s.

After a few hours of that, we decided to go home and swim in some clean swimming pool water! It was fabulous. The kids love when Mommy goes swimming — it’s a rare treat. But, being the wuss I am, the water’s gotta be over 85 degrees before I’ll go in. (Yes, this is the part where people say, “But you swam in Lake Michigan on New Year’s Day!” I plead temporary insanity. ‘Nuff said.)

To cap off the weekend, we popped some popcorn and watched the original Star Wars movie. Actually, the kids and I did. Mike zonked out in the massage chair, and slept through most of the movie. I think he wants to keep his “I’ve never seen that movie in its entirety” record intact.

Sigh. So, you see — I didn’t do a damn bit of work this weekend. My goal for the week is to catch up on laundry, write birthday thank you notes (for Meg) and complete 5 circle journal layouts.

Don’t laugh. It’s possible . . . .

Is it possible??

2005
07.14

Is it possible for one to forget that they have a blog, and are supposed to post to it?? ‘Cause honestly — this past few weeks has been so stinkin’ busy that I forgot. I forgot not only to post — but to check for comments made, too!! I suck at this!! So, waving hello to all of the people who have stopped in again, or who have just found me!! I’ll try to update everyone on what the Flynn gang has been up to!! (I’ll also add some photos this evening. I’ve, of course, been documenting everything!!)

Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival was was held last weekend! Friday night was the parade and opening ceremony. The Flynnigan’s Wake team looked FABULOUS, if I must say, wearing their team shirts and Gilligan-style hats!! We also had a banner with our logo and the team slogan (which, oddly enough, my son Reilly came up with): “Move it, Gramma . . . . This ain’t no funeral.” (How SASSY!! But people loved it!!) My sister-in-law Chris made a last minute phone call, and was able to convince a bagpiping friend to march in the parade ahead of us playing “Amazing Grace”. Very funeral-esque!! Oh, and we also had a Grim Reaper carryinig a paddle instead of a scythe.

After the parade, there was an opening ceremony called “The Waking of the Dragons” which involved some martial art students dancing around in dragon costumes. The dragons were pretty cool.

Then, Saturday was race day!! Our team raced in the first race of the day, at 8:30am!! Mike had to be down there by 6:30 to help set up the team tent. The kids and I staked out our spot at 7:30. Talk about EARLY!! Yikes! The team did well — they were in first until the last 50 meters or so, but then slipped into 2nd. Their time for the 500 meter race was 2 minutes 20 seconds. The second race, held after lunch, was faster at 2 minutes 18 seconds. They would have been faster, except they met with an untimely wake, and took on a lot of water!! The team didn’t make it to the finals this year, though. They way they decide who goes and who doesn’t is complicated — but basically any team (fast or not) can make it into one of 4 divisions. Maybe next year. In all, despite a long day — nearly 12 hours out in the sun and heat — everyone had a great time!! Oh, did I mention that I didn’t have to race?? LOL! I got to practice twice — and almost got called into service on another team for their 2nd race — but didn’t end up in the boat that day. I think I probably will next year, though.

Meghan’s Birthday
My baby . . . she turned FIVE on Tuesday. Darn kid. That hit me hard, for whatever reason. They’re not supposed to grow up so stinkin’ fast. She’s quite proud of her new “big girl” status — meaning no more naps at daycare!!

**Pardon me while I interrupt my own post. A freakin’ Blue Angel airplane just buzzed past my office window. They’re in Milwaukee practicing for an airshow this weekend!! Wow!! Scared the doody out of me!! I want to go outside and watch!!**

Anyways, Meg’s birthday was celebrated with a pool party on Sunday at our house with the Flynns. My mother-in-law looked at the 15 (of the possible 20 total) Flynn grandchildren swimming in the pool and said, “Look! Flynn Soup!” So right. It was slightly unnerving having 15 children in the pool at once. I became rather edgy and quite cranky, especially when the adults thought it would be fun to start shoving each other in the pool — despite the fact I had been trying to enforce a “No Rough-Housing” policy on their children all afternoon. I’m sure I’m being complained about for wrecking everyone’s fun . . . but I’m just happy that we didn’t have any injuries or fatalities!!

On Tuesday, my parents came over and we celebrated again. Meg is spoiled, for sure. She got the pink gameboy that she HAD to have. Did you know that pink Gameboys are only available in JAPAN???? They are. Fortunately, I didn’t have to travel to Japan (thanks to Ebay!) but the vacation might have been nice. I could certainly use one right about now!!

My To Do List
I fell like I will never, ever finish everything on my To Do list. I’ve got Circle Journals to finish. I have puzzles and postcards to get into the mail! I need to prepare for next month’s 2peas Crop. Reilly’s birthday is rapidly approaching. So is Scout Camp! This weekend is our Wedding Anniversary! (Eleven years!!) I need a haircut. I’ve got more projects to do than than there are hours per day to do them. I am stressed out. If anyone would like a job as a personal assitant, I’m considering hiring one!! LOL! ‘Cause cloning isn’t an option yet, is it??
