Cozy spaces

2010
06.10

As of yesterday, we’ve lived in our house for 10 years.  When we moved in, I was 8 months pregnant with Meghan.  At that point in time, I was more concerned with having a bigger space for our growing family than in making it feel homey.  Mike painted all of the rooms to freshen things up — mostly a lovely neutral beige.  And over the past 10 years, we’ve slowly made this 70’s ranch *ours*.  Now, if you’ve ever experienced a 70’s ranch, you will know that they lack, well, uh, character.  Our first home was a 1920’s cape cod that was adorable, even unfurnished.  The new house had so many awesome perks — the pool, hot tub and finished basement sold us!  But it took *so* long to actually make it feel personal.  It’s still a work in progress, but I can finally say that it feels like home.

One of the spots that has bothered me for some time is our front porch.  The porch at our old house was a source of pride.  People would stop and comment on how adorable our house was all the time, mostly thanks to the former owner who added the cute porch.  The porch on the ranch . . . well, not so much.  In the summer, it’s an awkward seating area that no one uses.  In the winter, it’s an ugly repository for summer patio furniture.  Bleh.

Over Memorial Day weekend, since we stayed home, I decided to make it my fix-it project!  And I’m quite pleased with how it turned out!  It started with a small bistro set I found at a great price . . . and snowballed from there!

Take a peek:

A close up of the new seating area:

To the bistro set, I added some cute cushions with a lime green & robin’s egg blue paisley pattern, a fun felt placemat and a potted plant (that I will mostly likely kill by summer’s end!  Green thumb I am not!)    I also hung a lantern over the table for a little evening ambiance!

On the wall behind the table, I created a fun focal point with a cool vintage window frame (that my friend Barb gave me years ago, and had to be unearthed from the corner of my garage!),  a wreath and a “relax” sign that I found at TJ Maxx!

Love it!  To finish off the porch, we added a few colorful flower pots and strung some grapevine lights across the front.  These look awesome in the evening, all lit up!

It appears that my little “makeover” worked!  We’re using (and loving) our front porch a lot more!!  Last weekend, Mike and I enjoyed a cocktail while watching the rain pour — and we stayed dry and cozy!  Last night, as the sun was setting, I took advantage of the sunset and western exposure to take these photos and enjoy some quiet time with my nook and a cup of coffee!

Aah!!!  Heavenly!

Photography

2009

Photography has fascinated me for as long as I can remember.  I think the ability to capture a treasured moment for eternity has a huge appeal.  There are so many moments of my life that I wish had been captured in a photo . . . and I guess I’m always mindful of that.  I take a lot of photos.

I got a 35mm film camera shortly after Reilly was born, because I figured some day he’d want to have good photos of himself as a child.  Mike has very few photos of himself as a kid — one of the negatives of being the 7th of 9, I guess.  I have a bunch of photos, but I wouldn’t necessarily call them “good”.  My mom’s photography skills have been joked about for as long as I can remember.  Anyhow, I wanted to document his life nicely.

When I began to scrapbook, it created the urge to improve my photography skills even more.  I worked on perfecting “my eye” if not the technical aspects of photography . . . and it paid off.  When Meghan was born and our favorite portrait photographer left the studio we regularly visited, I said “To heck with it.” and started taking my own.  And family members took notice and encouraged me.

Of course, before long, I decided I “needed” a DSLR.  And right about the time I began this blog, Mike surprised me with one for Mother’s Day.  Like so many others, having the ability to take a gazillion photos with instant access to view them made it easy to practice, practice, practice.  (And delete, delete, delete!)  But over the years, I’ve gotten better and learned a lot.  I mostly shoot for my own enjoyment . . . but have been called on occasionally by a friend or family member to take photos for them.  Would I ever do it professionally?  I doubt it . . . but I certainly enjoy the thrill of getting “the perfect shot”.

So, anyways . . . I was recently asked by my dear friend (and photographer extraordinaire!) Tracie to assist her with a wedding that she’s shooting at the end of September.  I was honored, humbled, and excited to have such a great opportunity given to me!

In anticipation of the wedding, Tracie lent me the camera I will be using that day so I can get used to the differences between it and my own DSLR.  Hers is waaaaaay nicer, and I now have the “upgrade” itch!!  (Sorry, dearest husband!!)  I spent the weekend practicing with it and was blown away with the results I was getting.

I thought I’d share some of the photos I took, just for fun.  I don’t normally document a weekend quite as heavily in photos!  I must thank my family for being patient subjects, as they had a (very large) camera lens in their faces much of the time!

The photos:

Pool time with Meghan.  I got to experiment with sunny conditions and some shade, too.

On Sunday, our family went geocaching for the first time.  I knew I wouldn’t get my hands on the GPS, so I brought the camera along instead.  These photos were at the first cache location, a small cemetery close to our house.  Those old grave markers were amazing, and I love these photos.

The next photos were taken in park where the 2nd cache was located.  A cool tree, and the hidden cache!

Tonight, the camera is coming with me to football practice, so I can work some more on Live Action shots!

I’m so grateful for the chance to improve my photography skills once again!  Thanks, Tracie!!

Recycle Project: Weekend Craftiness

2009
05.27

I mentioned earlier that Meghan had a recycle project and presentation to work on for her social studies class.  As soon as she mentioned the words “recycle” and “crafts” in the same sentence, my brain went on creative hyperdrive!  She and I were giddy with excitement over the concept of repurposing 3 bags from other materials.  We spent all weekend with our new sewing machines and made the coolest things!  I got to try out a few things I’ve been wanting to try . . . and Lolly got to work on her sewing skills.  A win-win for both of us.

Here is project #1:  Our Betz White 2-necktie water bottle holder. We actually made two of these because they were so cute, fast and simple!  We bought our neckties at Goodwill for $1.50 apiece, but we would have raided Dad’s closet if we hadn’t been able to find any!

The next project we made was a felted sweater purse.  I had made these before, and the only problem we had with this one was that the wool sweater I had on-hand was a turtle-neck rather than a crew-neck . . . which somehow forced the handles of the bag to be skinnier than the others I’ve made.  To make these, you basically cut off the sleeves and the neckline of the felted sweater (to make a tank top-looking garment), line up the side seams, and sew along the bottom.  Easy peasy.  The result:

Our final bag was the one that was probably the most fun and “science experiment” of the bunch.  We made a lunch bag out of Fused Plastic Bags. It was fun to experiment with different types of plastic bags to see which ones fuse the best.  Thankfully (because I had so many of them!) the Target bags fused together PERFECTLY!  They are so cute, too!  If you try this project, make sure to work in a well-ventilated area, because melting plastic is kind of smelly.  We worked in the garage and smell was not a problem.  We found that fusing 6 layers of bags worked very well.  The product was definitely sturdy, but not too think to sew through without difficulty.  To keep the project fairly simple, we took our fused plastic and made a simple sack . . . but we could have added handles or a closure to make the bag even more useful.    Here’s our cool new lunch bag:

Meg is giving her oral report today, and I wish I were there to hear her present it to her class.  Her enthusiasm is apparent, and you can tell that she is proud of the items she made.  I’m quite proud of her, as well, for being willing to tackle this project with her craft-crazed Momma!  Good luck today, Lolly!

Playtime Inspiration

2009
05.15

So, here it is Friday again, and I’ve been a blogging slacker all week.  My apologies.  It has been a rough week for me emotionally, not to mention a busy one . . . hence my silence.  Needless to say, I am glad it’s Friday and that playtime will soon be upon me.

Meg has a social studies project to work on, and I (for once!?) am excited to help her with this one!  They just finished a chapter on recycling, and she needs to make something entirely out of recycled objects and then give a presentation on it!  Now you’re speakin’ my language!  Meg laughed when I shared my ambitious project ideas with her . . . but she’s totally on board.  Love my little eco-girl.

So here’s our plan.  We are going to start with this:  a Betz White 2-necktie water bottle holder.   (Oh, for cute!)  Next, we’re going to make a purse out of a felted wool sweater.  She and I made a few of these last year and gave them out for Christmas presents.  Finally, if we have time, we’re going to try to make some Fused Plastic Bag totes.   Meg is psyched because she’ll get to use the fun little sewing machine that Santa brought her for Christmas!  I will post photos when we’re done.

In other crafty news . . .

I was so excited to see that there is a Wreck This Journal blogging group starting up next month!  I bought this awesome book going on 2 years ago, and haven’t had the courange to put a single mark in it.  Perhaps through peer pressure and a sense of shared anxiety, I will actually feel brave enough to do as the title of the book suggests.  Learn more and sign up for the blog group here:  Wreck This Journal Blogging Group

Finally, I found an awesome website repository for some great printables.  Who doesn’t love cool, creative stuff that some other brilliant person made and is willing to share??  Go here: Blah, Blah, Blagh printables.  Be inspired.  Download goodness.

Happy weekend, all!

Peace!
